Personal Statement

"There are three aspects to the work that I am attempting to improve upon, and these are technique, concept and expression. Eventually I hope to combine all these elements in a single painting, but for now the focus has been on technique in my domestic paintings, landscapes and figure studies; expression in portraits; and to the end of deepening conceptual value, I've worked on a number of surreal paintings involving animals and symbols. I also enjoy finger painting.

Artist Bio

In the spring of 2002, my mother had an operation that did not go well. Sitting in a hospital waiting room for several months gave me a lot of time to think. At one point my sister asked me to make a painting for her even though I had not painted in almost a decade. She offered to buy my supplies in exchange for a finished piece with no particular theme in mind. Having left my work and my friends in LA, I think she just wanted to give me something productive to do to take my mind off of things. This experience would change the direction of my life.

Soon my mother was much improved, and I used the remainder of my savings to travel to Europe as I had previously planned. During my travels I became obsessed with art and the history of western art in particular. I consider myself very fortunate to have rediscovered this interest in places like the Louvre, the National Gallery, Tate Modern, the Uffizi, and not just the museums, but also the landscapes like Mont St. Michel and the Boboli Gardens.

When I returned to Texas, I decided to move to a cabin in the country where I spent some time on a series of paintings that I eventually showed at Star Seeds Cafe. I did not know this then, but cafes would prove my main opportunity for exhibition of my work. I don't really see this as a bad thing either, as my first job in Austin was at Les Amis Cafe. There I learned a great appreciation for cafe culture, and like Edvard Munch at the Black Piglet, it became my home, my family.

Since the show at Star Seeds, I have shown at D&L's Texas Music Cafe, Cafe Mundi, and the Dandelion Cafe. I have also opened my studio for the E.A.S.T. project in '05 and '06.

Upcoming Shows

Not planning any shows, however, I will in all probability apply for E.A.S.T. again this year.
